I don't think I have an hdmi hook up on my 2001 Pioneer Elite TV. Guess that means component. Will my picture on gaming and DVD's be below average? What's the best I can hope for? Thanks!

  1. Your TV can support 480p or 1080i, but it can only have one native resolution.  I am assuming 480p.  Component will still provide you good quality.  Component can handle 480p, 720p and 1080i.

You are going to get above average quality with your TV, but you will not get the best quality.  I would set your PS3 at 1080i and DVD at 480p.

If you can provide us with a model number, we can tell you what outputs it has and the supported resolutions.

  2. "TV is 480p and 1080i."

I'm pretty sure the post didn't mention 720p ...  Somebody try to answer this guy's question they way he asked it.

  3. Use the component cable. Your tv should be okay to diplay games at 720p and 1080i.

  4. Your model number is correct and there was no such thing as HDMI back then, sorry.

You are stuck in the argument we (the HD industry) used to have before 1080p. Which is better, 720p or 1080i?

Taking the slice of time aproach, 720p wins. Since 1080i is only scanning 540 lines at any given moment, and 720p is scanning 720 lines at any given moment, 720p is better.

People that side with 1080i say that you get more overall detail through tricking your eyes into believing there's actually 1080 lines all the time. The problem is that once you start using interlace tricks again, you bring back all those ugly motion artifacts that we used to have to tollerate while watching old fashion TV.

Use your component cables, set for 720p, and enjoy!

  5. 1080i is pretty good, but I'd say go 720p, its just as good as 1080i and way better than 480p. Besides 90% of games out right now can only go to 720p
