Question:

PS3 component cables into a receiver, not showing up on projector throught HDMI output?

I have a PS3 with HD component cables going into a Denon AVR-688. There is a HDMI cable going out to my Epson 1080UB projector. I am getting the message saying there is not a signal. I have also tried using a HDMI cable from the PS3 into the receiver and I get the same results. I know the projector is good because my DVD player is connected to the receiver through a HDMI cable. The PS3 works great on my other TV, same receiver, but the out put is through HD component cables. Any suggestions?

  1. I have the same receiver.  It cannot convert between Component and HDMI.  If you want to use component video for your PS3, you must connect the receiver to your TV using component video.

The PS3 should be able to use HDMI as well.  The PS3 should detect that you are using a HDMI cable and configure itself automatically.  Of course that would mean you need to have the receiver set to use the HDMI port where the PS3 is plugged in.

Try taking the HDMI cable from the DVD Player and plugging it into the PS3.  If that doesn't work, maybe your PS3's HDMI port isn't working.  If it does work, then maybe the HDMI cable you were using is bad, or the receiver's 2nd HDMI port turned off (you can turn it on in the receiver's input menu) or is bad.

  2. Unfortunately I don't think that your AVR-688 as the ability to transcode the analog component signal up to the Digital HDMI signal, that is a feature available on the higher models from denon.  So you should use the HDMI, but the problem might be that your PS3 isn't configured properly for an HDMI connection.  Take the standard av cables it comes with and hook the ps3 up to a standard tv so you can get access to the menu.  Under the settings for display the system will take you through configuring for HDMI connections.  The problem is that once you have chosen the right settings, the screen will go blank on you (the ps3 has changed its output) but does need a confirmation to accept the change, so move your cursor to the right and press x to confirm the settings (you will be doing this blind).  Once that is done reconnect it to the denon receiver and make sure the denon is setup to recieve the HDMI signal for the input button you have chosen for the ps3 and you should be good to go.
