PS3 controlled won't turn on without USB cable?

I've had my PS3 for about 3 months and I'm using the controller that was included with it. It was working fine up until last week when the battery died. After that, when I push the PS button, nothing happens (not even the blinking lights come on). I have to plug it into the USB cable and then it will instantly connect (again, no flashing lights...) but as soon as I unplug it, it turns off again. I'm pretty sure it's the controller because I have a second one that works just fine. I haven't tried resetting it but from what I've heard that doesn't work.

Any ideas?

i have the exact same problem with my controler and i cant find anything to fix it lol i think it just might be a faulty controler
