Does the PS3 have too little memory?

It has has 256 MB of XDR main memory and 256 MB of GDDR3 video memory for the RSX.

Can someone explain to me what that means?

And why didnt they put more memory?

Cheers!

  1. The differences is that part of the memory is dedicated to graphic calculations and part to other calculations. XDR memory is extremly fast - 3,2 Ghz. GDDR3 - 700  Mhz.

  2. I think it is 256MB RAM, however, despite it is not much for PCs, it is enough for the games on the PS3.

  3. I think it's too little. I've run YDL and Ubuntu (Kubuntu, actually) and I think that's a good starting point for any sort of comparo.

If you think about it, the PS3 is just a UNIX/Linux box with custom hardware. As a PS3 it runs a lot better than as a 'nix box, and for several good reasons. Still, as a 'nix box you run into it's physical memory limitations quickly. As a PS3 you run into them as well, but it takes a little longer since it's quite good at being a PS3.

Sony is right and wrong about developing for the PS3. Yes, if people could utilise the SDK and the Cells better they could make even better games - RAM being irrelevant. But it's not irrelevant, it's just less relevant. You still are going to reach those limitations.

Or let me put it this way: right now, 60fps games are 720p resolution. When we have 60fps games at 1080p with no dropped frames/lag/etc, I'll concede that RAM is a non-issue. My bet is that no one makes it to that point.

On a personal note, if you're Sony and you're taking an absolute bath on these things and losing $500 per system (as it was rumoured at launch), what's an extra $30 to give it 1GB of RAM?

  4. It's enough for the games they're trying to run.  Computers come with 2 GB of RAM because windows vista is a big memory-hogging piece of c**p.  The games themselves really don't use all that much memory.  Why do you think the PS3 doesn't have enough?

It probably wouldn't have hurt to throw in an additional 256MB, but that would have just tacked on to the already huge price of the system, which they were already losing money on.  Since they could live without the extra memory, they just went with what they needed.

  5. My ps3 has 80 GIGA BYTES that is more
