PS3 plays DVDs at 1080i. How?

I like watching DVDs on my PS3. I have it plugged into my 37 inch Vizio HDTV with an HDMI cable. When I'm watching one and hit the Info button on the TV remote it says that I'm watchin the DVD in 1080i. I didn;t think the PS3 upscaled DVDs, but maybe I'm wrong? No matter what, the DVDs look great on this setup and I love it. I'm just curious as to whether or not I really am watchin DVDs upscaled or not. Thanks to anyone with any worthwhile answer. =]

  1. Yes it is up-scaled by the PS3.

Your TV will automatically up-scale the video - but some DVD players do a slightly better job than the TV.  I suspect the PS3 having all the gaming horsepower to draw upon can do a good job of up converting the video.

  2. Yes, it does upscale DVDs.  According to this article, there was a firmware update last year that brought this functionality to the PS3.

  3. They do look great dont they?  Bluray looks even better though.

    And yes, PS3 upscales DVD's.
