PS3 setting up display?

I have the component cord or whatever its called the red green blue white and red. My tv is kinda old I guess about 5 years maybe? Its a big screen tv the older bigger ones.

On the back theres the component inputs. I hooked it all up and it works. I ran this through my surround by the way its fairly new.

But when I try to input display under Component / D terminal you know it says Standard (NTCS)

it has the displays 480P 720I 720P 1080I and 1080P. I know the tv won't display 1080P too old for it. But even 480P it goes to the 30 second thing and tv makes all theses weird lines and everything then comes back. So I leave it blank and conitinue but then I goto the settings and it says display 480i.

Im not sure but if the tv has the cables for it shouldn't it display at 480P atleast? I mean the regular red yellow white displayed at 480i.

This tv at its time was like expensive and the cables and HDTV have been out since like 1998 or something. Just wondering did they put them on the tv for no reason or what. Do I have to change the settings in the tv some how? Would that be it? Tv is a Phillips. Sorry but I have no idea when it comes to this stuff.

I have tried finding my tv on the web for information but no luck. All I know is its a Phillips.

  1. My guess is that your TV is not 720 or 1080 since its 5 years old.  720i/p was the old HD format and 1080i/p is the new HD format be less common and more expensive then 720.  Unless your TV was designed for 720 is wont neccisarily have it per say.  You said it was the old kind so I am guessint its a projection type tv with the large ted/green/blue flood lights and those typically arent HD tv's.  Regardless though the tv will produce 480i as all TV will do that.  The thing you will have to do if its not displaying correctly is to change the setting in the PS3 to the settings your tv wants.  If your tv will produce 720 then tell the PS3 to produce 720.  If 480 is the best your tv can do, then tell the PS3 to produce that.  It could be that the PS 3 is defaulting to 720 or better and thats why its looks funny and your tv cant handle that.  The cable type whether its the old RCA type cable, the component cable (3 seperate cable which are red, green and blue) or even an HDMI cable, dosent indicate the resolution of your tv.  The better cable technology will only ensure that a clean correct high resolution signal will be passed along but if your tv cant produce high res pictures then the signal will be downgraded at the end of the cable to whatever your tv can handle.

Your best bet, is to do more research on your tv and find out what resolutions it can handle.  If you finally find your tv on the net with the specs on it and it doenst mention if anything about high def or image resolution then you can assume its low resolution and that means 480i.  It might be time for a Full HD tv my friend.  PS3 can feed your tv 1080p which is full hd and its awesome to say the least.  Well worth any investment you will have to make.
