Question:

PS3 vs. Bluray disc player?

I know that I am getting a Blu-ray player because I have a 65" 1080p television and standard DVDs arent cutting completely. I am also a gamer and was wondering if there really is a difference in quality between the disc playback on a PS3 versus a standard Blu-ray player.

  1. PS3 plays video games and bluray.Bluray just plays Bluray

  2. Both will output 1080p but the video chipset in the PS3 for bluray playback might be cheaper than the ones in the higher-priced standalones

  3. definetley get a ps3 if your a gamer its the obvious choice as theres no difference between the ps3's bluray and a stand alone blu ray player. also the ps3 is cheaper

  4. No same thing, but its some how PS3 is more comfortable for me.

  5. Not, really, but as you use the PS3 more for videos the quality Will degrade over a set number of years. yet, the PS3 is an overall better buy.

  6. well tbh i thought a blu ray player was a bluray player whether its inside a ps3 or not. and dont forget the ps3 bluray player wud be a sony one so it wont be rubbish

  7. PS3.

they are practically the same thing exept PS3's are way cheaper!

    :]

  8. I'll give you the official down-low because I have an advanced setup using PS3 and some other good stuff.  To answer your question quickly, PS3 is the best current player for several reasons:

    1) Fastest boot times - because onboard memory is plentiful in this system, even BD-Java encoded discs (ie., Pirates 3) will load quickly and not bog down.

    2) Already BD 2.0 - BD 2.0 is beyond the "final standard profile" and includes every feature offered by HD-DVD like ethernet connectivity to support online features/games and PIP video segments (allows you to see commentary videos and production segments) on discs formatted for this.

There is another question to consider, "What features doesn't it have?"

    1)  Not infrared-capable out of the box - if you want to integrate this system with your Harmony remote or other universal remote, you cannot do it out of the box.  PS3 is Bluetooth, which is great, but a Bluetooth-to-infrared communication gateway would be necessary for full integration.

    2) Bitstream audio output through HDMI - if you have a high end receiver (me: Onkyo TXSR805B), speakers (me: KEF KHT3005BL) and the desire to hear audio unlike anything you've ever heard before, bitstream audio is a feature you would love to have.  Bitstreaming allows the Blu-ray to output the audio in a compressed format over HDMI 1.3a cables direct to the receiver.  This signal is decompressed by the receiver, instead of the fairly low-quality DACs provided inside the PS3 (or, really, any Blu-ray).  Once the receiver decodes this audio, it knows exactly how to handle the info.

--If you don't have Bitstream from the PS3, you can still output what's called LPCM (linear pulse code modulation).  This is an audio stream decoded by the player and output though any HDMI 1.1 (maybe 1.2, I forget) or higher in uncompressed format.

The argument here is wouldn't you hope your receiver has better DACs than the stupid BD?  If not, return yours and get a high-end Onkyo, Denon, Harmon Kardon, Yamaha, etc.

Sorry, got sidetracked a bit with features.  Video playback is absolutely the same as any other BD player.  It's integrated intot the system.  Unlike PS2 or 1, the games for PS3 are on Blu-ray discs and not some propietary Sony format (those weird black-looking discs).  Good news for all because they store so many pretty textures for the games.

Final word:  If you want sweet-as-heck video games and Blu-ray, PS3 is the best.  It's only competition from the stand-alone players is the Panasonic 30k model, which will bitstream audio (I've done it; ignore Onkyo's FAQ saying otherwise).  Panno's model is great, just a little slower and while stylish, isn't as s**y as the PS3.

  9. Yep.

  10. no they are the same i believe

  11. My fiance and I have a PS3 that we use as our Blu-Ray player and the quality is phenomenal.  However, I've never watched a blu-ray on a ps3 and blu-ray player side-by-side to compare it.  I'd say go for the PS3... two in one.  =)

  12. no.  same quality

  13. Isn't a PS3 no Bluray disc player ?

    Of course, PS3 !

    :- )
