Is a PS3 really worth buying? I need the Blu-Ray player. Does the one in a PS3 compare to other players?

  1. Because of its fast load times and rugged construction (due to the fact that it's a gaming console), the PS3 is considered by many to be the best Blu-Ray player available.

  2. It has a built in hard drive for downloading movies/trailers/games. Sony announced at CES '08 that it is working on a deal to bring Blu-ray movies to the Playstation Store for download.

The PS3 has built-in Bluetooth. You can operate the Blu-ray remote control (separate purchase) from anywhere in your house...you can also use the included game controller if you want but it's weird lookin' as a movie remote.

It's got built in WiFi for easy connnection.

Why buy a stand-alone when you get all this for the same price?

  3. At 499, a PS3 is only slightly more expensive then a BluRay player, and not only it works well but can play games.

Your other options are hybrid players that can play both HD and BluRay (LG, Samsung).  Otherwise, unless you want to save 100-150 on a bluray only player, no reason not to get one.

  4. Go with the PS3 because a lot of Blu-Ray players don't come with an ethernet port for updating the firmware, like the PS3 can. This is important because 2 years from now a Blu-Ray movie will have features that will require your blu-ray player to have certain firmware updates in order to play on the features. HD-DVD players all come with ethernet ports for this very reason as well.

Plus if you get the PS3, then you can get Rock Band and have a great party game for when people come over.
