PS3 wont play PS1 !!!?

Question

I just put in final fantasy 8 onto my PS3 clicked play. Once the playstation icon came up the screen then went blank and nothing happens. The only thing i can do is click the PS button in the middle of the controller.

My PS3 is 40gb and i was told these play PS1 games?

Is there any settings i need to adjust?

I run it on my HD tv with my HDMI cable. Do i need to revert to scart or something?

you can never ever play ps1 games on a system that has 40 gb are even a system that has 80 gb ever who ever told you that you could play ps1 games on a ps3 dont know what they are talking about ever my 2 friends can at gamestop can tell you this to 214-823-1061 paul are laura

p.s. tell your friends are who ever told you this they dont even have a clue at all ever cause they dont own a ps3 thats why

Oh, that's because you have the 40gb ps3... you were suppose to know that the system does not go back for the 40gig when you bought it... that's part of why its cheaper... sorry bout that man

The 40GB PS3 is not backwards compatible.  The original 80 GB version is somewhat compatible.  The most compatible PS3 released was the 60GB PS3.  

Sorry you spent that money and cannot play your old games on the new system.  It was a ll cost savings method for Sony.
