Hey I'm taking PSAT's sohphomore year in October next year.

Is PSAT's a requirement or anyhow beneficial for college?

Is it worth studying for or is it mandatory to study for it.

I know it's only preperatory however, I've heard around that it's crucial to study for. Is this true?

  1. PSATS aren't required. However, they can prepare you for the SAT, which is crucial to get into college.  The PSAT is like a mini SAT. Also, good scores can get you scholarships and awards. Colleges won't see your scores though.  Don't study for it; you'll see what you need to work on for the SAT.

  2. Some may say that the PSAT is quite important.

    1) it shows you your potential before you take the SAT meaning you know what to work on before you take the real one.

    2) It is also the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test).. if you're smart and qualify as National Merit Finalist, then good thing you took them, right? With that title, colleges will definitely look at you and a handful of scholarships will head your way.

HOWEVER, you said you were a sophomore taking them and that's the little catch. In order to be entered in the NMSQT, you must be a JUNIOR. Therefore, the second bullet doesn't really apply. Nevertheless, the PSAT is for sure a good practice test if you're determined to do the best as possible. Taking it as a soph can help you do better w/ qualifying in the NMSQT as a junior.

    Good luck

  3. chill.. when sophomores take it it's merely for practice.  has nothing to do with colleges.  they don't even see it.

when juniors take it it's only for the merit scholarship competition.  if they rank 98 or 99th percentile they have a shot at semifinalist.. finalist.. and get a  merit scholarship.  looks good for colleges but if you don't get it it doesn't look bad.

the real SAT is kindof crucial to study for, however, because it actually has a lot to do with college admissions.

  4. Hi!

I took them last fall, and its not at all necessary to study.

Taking the PSAT your sophomore year is only really for your benefit so you can know what type of questions are on the real SAT and how you might do. So it doesn't matter how well or poorly you do. If you do poorly, you just know you have to study alot for the real SAT.

What you may be thinking of is that if you do really well on them your junior you can qualify for a Nation Merit Scholarship.
