Both sides started the match positively and tried to take the early lead. However, it took 30 minutes for the opening goal. The Boeren took the lead when Mertens whipped in a free-kick that found the top corner of the net.
In the 39th minute, Van Steensel’s cross into the box found Te Vrede, who made no mistake in hitting the back of the net. At the half-time interval, both sides were on level terms.
The Boeren started proceedings after the break aggressively in front of their home crowd and were rewarded within two minutes of play when Toivonen added his name to the score-sheet. Strootman made an impressive run before sending a cross into the area for
the Swede ace to head home.
Two minutes later, the hosts doubled the lead through Mertens. Smith partially cleared a Lens cross and the winger latched on to the loss ball before scoring his second of the evening.
The Boeren scored their fourth in the 51st minute, when Strootman sent a ball into the area for Mertens, who found the bottom corner to claim his hat-trick. At this moment, the home side were enjoying the evening and were looking extremely calm.
In the 73nd minute, Lens made it 5-1 for the home side, tapping in a pass from Mertens. With 11 minutes on the clock remaining, Toivonen scored his second of the game to seal the match 6-1 win in favour of the hosts.
