Fred Rutten, the PSV Eindhoven head coach, is on cloud nine following his side’s 1-0 triumph over FC Utrecht. His day was made even better by Ajax Amsterdam’s 2-2 stalemate against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AZ-c38571 Alkmaar.
The Dutch trainer revealed that his side had a great weekend, as the Boeren narrowed the gap with the league leaders AZ to just two points.
“PSV have had a great weekend. We’ve climbed into second place following our 1-0 victory, while our competitors, AZ and Ajax, dropped two points in a 2-2 draw”, Rutten was quoted as saying on the club's official website.
The Eindhoven giants staged a good show at Philips Stadion on Saturday, October 15. Despite failing to grab all their opportunities, they still cruised to an easy win by the end of the match against the Utreg.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rob-van-Dijk-c31210, saved his low effort with ease.
The hosts came close again at the half-hour mark, when Tim Matavz headed Mertens’ cross from the left just over the crossbar.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Georginio-Wijnaldum-c14629 was the next to miss another good opportunity five minutes after the break, as his left-footed shot sailed over the bar.
In the 63rd minute, Kevin Strootman’s impressive pass found Toivonen, but Van Dijk made a good save to deny the Swedish ace.
Four minutes later, Strootman was again involved in the build-up of another chance. His pass found Matavz, however, the Slovenian ace could only send a right-footed shot wide of the goal.
The consistent pressure paid dividends for the Eindhoven giants eventually. Toivonen’s powered effort from the edge of the box broke the deadlock in the 71st minute.
No more goals were added in the remaining 19 minutes and the match ended in a 1-0 win in favour of PSV.
Rutten admitted that his troops could have scored more than once but missed plenty of opportunities.
“We could have scored more goals tonight, though, but we did not, partly because of a lack of accuracy in the final pass or shot. Utrecht’s defensive line was well-organised. Once we’d taken a 1-0 lead, we got more space. We really had a good night of football”,
the Dutch mentor concluded.
PSV have climbed up to the second place in the league table after securing all three points, whereas FC Utrecht have dropped to 10th spot following their disappointing show at Philips Stadion.
In the tenth round of Eredivisie, the Utreg will host http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vitesse-c40905 Arnhem at GelreDome Stadion on Sunday, October 23.
