PSV Eindhoven head coach, d**k Advocaat, was extremely pleased with his side’s resounding 6-0 win over VVV-Venlo at De Koel Stadion on Sunday, September 30.
The 65-year-old tactician admitted that the home side had few goalscoring opportunities in the opening 15 minutes of game, but they failed to take advantage.
“VVV had chances to open the scoring in the first fifteen minutes. Fortunately they didn’t take them and after we had made the breakthrough we dominated the game and put in a fine performance”, Advocaat was quoted as saying in
the post-match press conference.
The veteran Dutch trainer went on to insist that his side struggled a bit in the opening half, despite the score-line indicating that it was a comfortable win.
“We beat http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VVV-Venlo-c40915 0-6 and that suggests it was a simple victory. But in fact, the first half was not a walkover at all”, Advocaat added.
VVV commenced proceedings brightly, and created a couple of good opportunities to grab the lead. However, they failed to break the deadlock, with Oguzhan Turk and Uche Nwofor sending their efforts wide of the target.
The Eindhoven giants managed to find their rhythm as the game progressed, and broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through Dries Mertens. Twelve minutes later, the Belgian winger scored his second of the evening to
double his side’s advantage.
After the half-time break, the Boeren continued to stage an impressive show. However, they failed to further extend their lead until the 75th minute, when substitute Jurgen Locadia found the back of the net.
Four minutes later, Mertens completed his hat-trick, while Locadia netted two more before the full time whistle to complete the 6-0 rout.
Advocaat took time to hail Mertens’ performance on the pitch, as he remained a constant menace at the left flank.
