PT Cruiser is making a noise and not accelerating - what could this be and how much might it cost?

My PT Cruiser is making a noise similar to a vacuum cleaner when I hit the gas pedal generally when I am under 30 mph. Once I get above it, the noise stops. Additionally, at the low speeds when starting from a stop or going up hill, I would lose the ability to accelerate. I would hit the gas pedal and nothing happens. After a couple of seconds, it starts to accelerate, but if this happens going up hill and someone is behind me, then that is an accident waiting to happen.

Any idea what this might be and how much it might cost?

sounds like the EGR valve. It shouldn't cost that much and isn't hard to change

don't know, it could be a lot of things.  You need to look under the hood and see if something is left off.  Check everything really close.  It sounds like vacuum, it sounds like a muffler, it sounds like a lot of things.
