It's definitely been pushed more underground than anything else but just as hip hop "ain't dead," neither is punk. It actually lives in more northern states (in the US) and the UK. But hip hop is alive in the south and the west coast (US). So, some of it has hit more underground but you know, that's what makes it greater. It's now exclusive. You don't hear every 13 year old wailing out the lyrics to a great song that is now mutilated by their voice =) It stays off of the "KidzBop" cds. Which is GREAT.
