Pablo Andujar destroys Victor Crivoi in the opening round – Mercedes Cup 2011
The twenty five year old, Espanola, Pablo Andujar, had an easy victory over his twenty nine year old, Romanian, opponent Victor Crivoi at the TC Weissenhof Court, Stuttgart, Germany.
Not meeting for the first time both the players, had experienced the style and technique of each other four times prior to this event in 2010, 2008 and twice in 2005. The last time they met was at Buneos Aires, Argentina where
Pablo had battled it out on a clay court and came out victorious in 2010. It was time for Crivoi to avenge his loss but in vain, he lost 2-6, 1-6 straight two sets. It was like as if he never tried!
The first set of the match saw neither of the players throw an ace; the Spaniard had struck three double faults out of which two hit the net and although, his accuracy seemed to wobble he still managed to win twice as many first
serve points and return points. He achieved four out of five break point advantages giving him another lead over his challenger. Victor, on the other hand, only had two break point advantages and a very poor first serve and return serve. Overall Pablo bagged
fifty percent of total service points, seventy percent of total return points and hence, won sixty percent of the set giving him a 1-0 lead.
During the second set Pablo threw an ace, had zero double faults ( a major improvement from the first set), won seventy eight percent of his second serve points and had availed three breakpoint advantages to his victory. Whereas,
Victor played one double fault, had a very poor second serve points along with return points and did not utilize his six breakpoint advantages thus losing the set
Both the sets were largely dominated by Pablo’s presence on the court; across the board, Pablo had won fifty six percent of his total service points along with sixty four percent of total return points thus giving a 2-0 lead over
his opponent.
Born on the 23rd of January 1986, the right-hander, Pablo Andujar, has played three Grand Slams this year and has had fourteen wins out of twenty nine matches played. His last run was at Wimbledon where he lost in the
first round against Ryan Sweeting of USA. At the French Open he qualified for the second round where he lost to Rafael Nadal. His most notable performance was when he played the world number 9 Fernando Verdasco at the ATP World Tour Masters Miami, winning
the set 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 tiebreaker.
