Pablo Andujar outguns Marius Copil in round of 16 - BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Completing the second round stage of BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011, an ATP Tour 250 event, on Thursday, 22nd September, Pablo Andujar, Spaniard, defeated local lad Marius Copil in straight sets 6-2,6-3, moving on to
the quarter-final round. Playing in the capital of Romania, Bucharest, it took Andujar an hour and 15 minutes to walk off the clay with a smile.
Walking towards the court the local lad had a loud cheer waiting for him. Winning the toss, Copil started off with serving the first game of the match. Serving out the opener, Copil switched the serve. Andujar, ranked world No.
43, followed up winning game 2, 1-1.
Winning a game each next, the two stood equal at 2-2 before the Spaniard made his move. Breaking the Romanian in game 5, Andujar led the set 3-2 and served for the next. Hoping to pull off the lead, Copil got shockers from the
higher ranked Spaniard.
Andujar knocked out the next 3 games, Serve-break-serve, winning the set 6-2 and taking the lead in the match, 1-0. Surprisingly the world N0.43 did not let Copil win even a single point in the last 4 games. Anyhow, the local lad,
frustrated, went on to try his luck in set 2.
The Romanian once again stood to serve the set opener, however, could not match the fierce forehands of the Spaniard. Breaking Copil in the first game, Andujar went of playing fantastic Cross-court shorts to outplay his rival.
However, the world NO.232 did manage to level the scores later.
Winning his first game of the set, game 3, 1-2, the Romanian 20-year-old broke the world NO.43 and stood equal, 2-2. However, failing to take advantage, Copil fell short and gave away a breakpoint in game 5, 3-2. Extending his
lead to 4-2, the Spaniard then served out game 6 and commanded the set.
With 3 games left next, the Spaniard lost the 7th, however, blistered game 8 and broke the Romanian in 9th to bag the 2nd set as well, 6-3, and the match 6-2, 6-3. Statically, the Spaniard almost
had the same total points of his return and his serve.
Totalling 61 points, including 33 service and 28 return points, the Spaniard walked away with a ticket to the quarter-final where he would play Alessandro Giannessi, Italian, to battle it out for the semis seat. Seeded world No.4
in the event, Andujar has an easy target next. Predictably, the Spaniard will win one more fixture in straight sets.
