Pablo Andujar rallies past Federico Delbonis into the second round – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
World number 39, Pablo Andujar of Spain, came back after losing the opening set to beat Argentinean, Federico Delbonis, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in Monaco on Tuesday.
The Spaniard required two hours and 30 minutes to beat Delbonis in a tight match.
Delbonis drew the first blood, breaking Andujar in the third game of the opening set but he failed to consolidate on it, losing his following serve and taking the score to 2-2. The Argentinean did not get de motivated, striking
again in the fifth and ninth game to seal it 6-3.
The 21-year-old had a low first serve percentage of 47, converting nine of the 16 of them into points. Delbonis performed better on the returns, claiming 14 of the 27 first and nine of the 16 second reply points. The Argentinean
saved six of the seven break points he faced and converted three of the seven he received in the opener.
In the second set, Delbonis and Andujar started by swapping a break in the opening two games to level the score at 1-1. The Spaniard hit blows again in the third and seventh to race to a 5-2 lead. Delbonis reduced the deficit by
grabbing two consecutive games, taking the score to 4-5 but Andujar succeeded in winning it 6-4.
The Spaniard was not that good on his serve, as he did not hit any ace and committed a couple of double faults. He put in 60 percent of the first serves, winning nine of the 15 points on them. In comparison, Delbonis gave even
more miserable performance on serve, as he hit five horrible double faults and just 50 percent of the first deliveries, bagging merely eight of the 16 points on them.
Andujar and Delbonis broke each other once in the first two games of the final set, evening out the score at 2-2. The Spaniard was brilliant after that, as he did not lose even a single game, striking twice and snatching four in
a row to win it 6-2.
The Valencia, Spain resident once again committed two double faults but this time he also banged in one ace. The right-hander was almost unplayable on the second returns, as he pocketed 12 of the 15 points on them in the decider.
Andujar is drawn to meet world number 26, Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, in the second round.
