Pablo Galdon battles past Roberto Quiroz in 1st round – Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011
Argentinean Pablo Galdon saw a tad difficulty in ousting Ecuadorian wildcard entrant Roberto Quiroz in the first round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
The two players were meeting for the first time and took up the challenge on outdoor classic courts of Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador. After one hour and thirty three minutes Argentinean Galdon thrashed the Ecuadorian wildcard entrant by surviving a mid match slip to score 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 on Tuesday the 22nd of November 2011.
Serving first after winning the service toss was Quiroz and both the players skilfully held their respective serves for the first four games to tie the score at two games each. Both the challengers were performing their level best and neither player wanted the other to take the lead.
As they kept matching a blow for a blow, the score progressed on even terms, levelling at three games each at the end of the sixth game and then finally at four games each by the end of the eighth game. It was a lucky break through for Galdon as he capitalized on a breakpoint and then held his serve to clog the opening set with a 6-4 victory to go one up in the match.
After taking a beating, Quiroz pulled up his socks and geared for the second set. However, a reversal of fortune took place as this time Quiroz took a notch higher in his display of power. He not only held his own service games but also bagged all his opponent’s service games. He completely dominated the second set and clogged the round with a bagel victory.
At the end of the first two sets, both the players had bagged a set each and opening the decisive round was Galdon this time. Once again both the players held their respective serves for first four games and the score had balanced out at two games each.
Once again the cat and mouse chase was initiated and from the very beginning both the players matched an eye for an eye with neither player losing control. The two were extremely competitive and kept bagging their respective service games with a hold of serve. The score tied at three games each and then ultimately at four games each at the end of the eighth game.
However, during the last two games Galdon did again, he held his serve and then broke his adversary to reel two successive games and in doing so he sealed his victory of the set and the match.
Next up for Galdon is sixth seeded compatriot Maximo Gonzalez.
