Pablo Galdon stuns seventh seeded Rogerio Dutra Da Silva in second round – BVA Open 2011 CH
Argentine qualifier, Pablo Galdon, flabbergasted the seventh seeded Brazilian, Rogerio Dutra Da Silva, in the second round of the 2011 BVA Open with a straight set triumph in just over an hour and eighteen minutes. Considerable
crowd jumbled up to witness their hot favourite home boy who disappointed every one of them with his sub-standard game play. The Argentine took the lead by winning the first set 6-3 and sealed the berth in the third round draw by stealing the second set 7-5.
The match was contested in Brazil on Thursday, October 27th.
World No.300, Galdon, overpowered World No.118, Silva, in straight sets. The momentum and confidence showed by the 25-year-old Argentine was fascinating. It was a perfect revenge for Galdon, for his defeat at Bucaramanga Challenger
earlier this year at the hands of Silva. He had just lost a single encounter from his last nine matches and was looking threatening right from the start of this match.
The Brazilian was also enjoying a good run of form and had multiple advantages like home crowd, superior ranking and familiar turf but he couldn’t capitalize on any of them. It was really a tamed effort from the seventh seed who
could have done better given the conditions.
25-year-old started the proceeding with an ace and continued an aggressive game play throughout the first set. He thumped his opponent hard by his fierce serves and delicately placed winners that enabled him to put a lot of pressure
on Silva and silenced the crowd.
The winner registered an exciting first and second serve success rate of 83% and 71% respectively; he broke his opponent’s serve once in the fifth set that helped him to take the lead of three sets.
Galdon won twenty-nine points whilst his seventh seeded competitor could only secure twenty points. Major upset was in the making and crowd was extremely frustrated with the performance of their home boy.
Trailing one set down and looking extremely rusty, it required a massive confidence booster for the Brazilian to bring his opponent down in the second set but it was not his day. The Argentine was on top of his game and rocked
the viewers in the second set as well.
Brazilian couldn’t manage to secure points on his serves and this lead to his downfall in the match. He was hammered all over the place and despite winning five games in the second set he couldn’t stop his competitor to take the
match.
Couple of breaks at crucial stages and two aces at the end from the winner were one of the best highlights of the second set.
Galdon knocked the Balneario resident in great fashion and marched into the quarter-finals where he faces-off against another Brazilian wildcard entrant Thiago Alves.
