Pablo Sandoval, Matt Cain lead San Francisco Giants to 4-2 win over New York Mets – MLB Update
The defending World Series champions, San Francisco Giants’ Pablo Sandoval and Matt Cain combined to elevate their club to 4-2 win over the New York Mets and to take the series 2-1 at the AT&T Park, on Sunday, July 10.
Pablo Sandoval opened the game with his line drive double to score Andres Torres in the bottom of the third inning. This hit took the first baseman’s hitting streak to 21 games. After this hit, he also justified his selection in the All-Star game by his
manager and all the fans who voted him.
Pablo will make his first All-Star appearance as the Mets’ short-stop Jose Reyes will be on the disabled list due to his hamstring injury.
However, after he led the game off, Nate Schierholtz scored an RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Then Miguel Tejada and Aaron Rowand each made an RBI single to elevate the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Until then, their starter Matt Cain held the opposing batting squad to no-score over his six innings. Cain gave away five hits and allowed three walks but none of it converted into a run. He also took four batters to get his eighth win of the season. This
win improved his record to 8-5 with 3.06 ERA in 19 starts.
"It feels good," Cain said. "We've put in a lot of work. We are finishing on a good note. We'll take the break and try to come back and do the same thing in the second half."
His rival Mike Pelfrey allowed eight hits, which cost him two runs over six innings. He struck-out five batters but it did not save him from eighth loss of the season.
The Mets’ bat worked little in the later part of the game as pinch-hitter Nick Evans and second baseman Justin Turner each scored an RBI single in the eighth and the ninth inning respectively to reduce the losing margin to 4-2. Evans scored off Jeff Affeldt
while Turner scored against Brian Wilson.
