Pablo and Cain dominate as San Francisco Giants overpower Arizona Diamondbacks: MLB Update
Pablo Sandoval and Matt Cain marshalled the San Francisco Giants, as they defeated their division rival, Arizona Diamondbacks, by 5-2 on Friday in the first meeting of the three-game series at Chase Field in Phoenix Arizona. Pablo hit a three-run homer and
Cain tossed six shutout innings to earn third-consecutive triumph for the club in the Major League Baseball (MLB) season.
In the first inning, third baseman, Sandoval, landed on the plate with two loaded-bases and touched 447-feet long homer to the right centre that paved the strong foundation for the team. With three runs, 3-0 on board, Cain was on the edge and began to utilise
his tricks right from the start. The right-hand pitcher, making his second start, began the first inning with two strikeouts and allowed one hit. The 27-year-old ball thrower tossed six score-less innings before yielding his first run in seventh.
"He's really, I think, grown so much over the past year and a half," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's carried what he did in the postseason to this year, that's mixing up pitches, quality strikes. He's got a good changeup going and good poise out there."
On the one side, Cain restricted the opposition from scoring, while on the other, batters pile two more runs. One of which came in the fourth inning when Miguel Tejeda touched to left side for runs batted in (RBI) single. The second came in a dramatic way.
With two loaded-bases, the Diamondbacks starter, Daniel Hudson, struck out Sandoval, but all three at bases started running and made a score due to a throwing error by the catcher Miguel Montero. It widened the lead to 5-0.
Cain also impressed the Diamondbacks' manager, Kirk Gibson, who regarded Cain as unpredictable. Gibson said, "Cain throws at least three pitches and throws them at any count. He is very unpredictable. He knows he can pitch and he knows he is good. He comes
right at you with good stuff. We aren't the only guys he has beaten up on."
The Diamondbacks led off in seventh inning when Cain had already designed the destruction. Willie Bloomquist chipped a sacrifice fly to open the account. He again came into action in the last of ninth inning with a RBI single, but could not reverse the result
in the team's favour.
Despite making 10 strikeouts, Hudson could not gather his first win of the season. The day was not in favour of Hudson, as he lost his third game of the season with 4.26 earned runs averages (ERA). The 24-year-old right-hand pitcher permitted five runs,
six hits and three walks. The relievers, Sam Demel and Esmerling Vasquez, did not allow any run in their short spells. Vasquez tossed 18 strikes of 26 pitches and ended the game with 0.00 ERA.
