Pacific Links Hawai'i Championship: Peter Senior leads one by one on day one
Peter Senior shot a seven-under par 65, in the opening round of the Pacific Links Hawai'i Championship, to take an early lead, on Friday, September 14, 2012.
Although not among the hot favourites of the tournament being played at the Kapolei Golf Course in Kapolei, Hawaii, the Australian thrashed his betting odds and reached atop the leaderboard.
Jay Don Blake, the winner of last month‘s Boeing Classic, shared the second position with Bill Glasson, after both the players recorded a six-under par 66.
Senior played a flawless game throughout the day while hitting the shots right where he was supposed to.
According to the golf experts, the 53-year-old looked in a great form, as he consistently divided the fairways and managed to hit most of the greens in regulation.
Senior confidently kicked off the opening round and parred the opening hole. He then posted two birdies in a row on the next two holes that he played.
Another two birdies on the 15th and the 18th hole took him to a four-under par score on the turn. Afterwards, he maintained his composure on the back nine and birdied three of the first four holes that he played.
Commentators said that he could have piled up a better score, but a run of five straight pars to end the day restrained him from going further low in the round.
Still, he managed to hold the top spot and wished to keep the momentum going into the remaining two rounds on weekend.
"It was a good hitting round and I putted extremely well for the first 15 holes," Senior said. "I wish it was that easy every day. ... I drove it well, which sets up this course. You've got to be coming from the fairway on a lot of your iron shots to get
a little bit of spin. ... These are exactly the same conditions I play in every day at home. The wind comes up in the afternoon”.
Senior has made a total of 65 starts so far in his career on the Champions Tour and he still searches for a win.
"It'd be nice to have a win," Senior said. "I've come close”.
