Pacific Open and Malaysian Open; Highlights from Thursday
The top seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki reached the semi final round of the Pan Pacific Open Women’s competition after Agnieszka Radwanska withdrew as a result of her foot injury in the opening set on Thursday.
At 5-0 down, the sixth seed Agnieszka from Poland consulted with a trainer prior to her withdrawal decision.
Hoping for her sixth trophy in 2010, the professional tennis star from Denmark, Caroline  Wozniacki will next play the eight seed Victoria Azarenka from Belarus on Friday.
Caroline could become the top ranked player in the world if she wins the crown and successfully makes her way into the final four in next week’s China Open competition.
If, however, the twenty year old Caroline does not overtake Williams on this occasion, she thinks other chances to be officially recognised as the world’s best will come her way soon.
"If I reach number one that is great. It is always been a goal of mine but if it doesn't happen this year there will be other chances,” said the world number two Caroline after her victory on Thursday.
Victoria, on the other hand made her way into the semi final round of Pan Pacific after getting the better of Coco Vandeweghe, a qualifier from the United States of America in straight sets. The final match score was 6-2 6-1.
In other clashes at the championship in the Japanese capital of Tokyo, French open winner Francesca Schiavone toppled Kaia Kanepi from Estonia in three sets. The final match score was 7-5 4-6 7-5.
Italy's Francesca will face the seventh seed Russian Elena Dementieva in the semis next. Elena defeated her compatriot and second seed foe, Vera Zvonareva in two sets. The final match score was 7-5 6-2.
In other news, the two time French Open runner up Robin Soderling from Sweden and Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych recorded impressive victories at the 2010 Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.
Swedish top seed Robin dispatched off Edouard Roger-Vasselin from France in two sets on Thursday. The final match score was 6-0, 6-1. The match concluded in a time period of sixty two minutes in Kuala Lumpur.
The third seed Tomas on the other hand, managed to get past Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
Robin, as a result of this victory will meet Andrey Golubev from Kazakhstan in the quarter final round of Malaysian Open. Andrey advanced into the quarters after dismissing Kevin Anderson 6-4, 7-6, (7-4).
World number five Soderling, dominated in his match yesterday right from the start, with the help of his accurate shot-making and blistering serves, missing eight points in the opening set, which lasted a mere twenty two minutes.
Roger-Vasselin played un an attacking manner in the following set and at last made it 1-0. However, it was all Robin from there and the Swede claimed the win with minimal fuss.
After the match Soderling said, "I anticipate a tough workout in the quarter finals as Andrey is more mobile and hits the ball really hard and flat."
Tomas on the other hand required just ninety minutes to go through; blasting a total of seven aces and breaking the world number forty three Denis on five occasions on Thursday.
He has had a disappointing follow-up after getting past Roger Federer in the Wimbledon quarters this year and advancing all the way to the title battle.
His previous career bests were a couple of quarter-finals in Toronto and Washington, with a United States Open departure in the opening round.
"My opponent was not easy, but there are no easy ones these days. I played well today, I felt good on the court. "That is important for the first match, I got my rhythm really fast,” said the world number seven Berdych after the
match.
Berdych will meet fifth seeded David Ferrer of Spain in the quarter-finals next.
