Packers’ Aaron Rodgers Suffers Concussion in Loss to Lions
Not for the first time this season, the Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be out until he can recover from a concussion.
Late in the second quarter, the Packers lost their star quarterback in a defeat to the Detroit Lions. Rodgers had taken back to back hits on successive plays before he had the concussion.
He was slow in getting up after being tackled by Detroit’s Amari Spievey and Landon Johnson.. The Packers took a timeout, where on the very next play, Rodgers was sacked.
The QB stayed to complete the drive, after which he was replaced by Matt Flynn, who is a second string quarterback for the Packers.
The Lions went on to win the game, 7-3.
"He was a little groggy after those two plays, and the medical staff and Aaron decided it was in his best interest not to go back in," Green Bay Coach Mike McCarthy said. "That's not my call, and I don't know any specifics."
Rodgers was not available for comments after coming out and was not in the locker room either when it was made open to the reporters. His status for next week’s game against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium is at the
moment unknown.
Rodgers suffered his first concussion against the Washington Redskins in Week 5 of the NFL Regular Season. He suffered a concussion near the end of the game, and was one of the many players injured in that game, which the Packers
lost in overtime. Rodgers played for the entire game and missed no action the next week either, in another overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Rodgers has yet to miss a game since 2008, when he was selected as the starting quarterback for Green Bay.
The Packers were not doing well even before Rodgers left. Although neither team had any points, Rodgers completed only seven passes out of 11 attempts. He had only 46 passing yards with one interception.
Flynn came in and made 15 completions out of 26 attempts for 177 yards, but had one interception near the end zone and no touchdowns. He did, however, set up Green Bay’s kicker Mason Crosby for their only point, a 42 yard field
goal in the third quarter.
The Lions went ahead late in the fourth with a 13 yard touchdown pass from Detroit quarterback Drew Stanton to Will Heller.
"I think overall I made some good plays out there, but I had a couple of mental mistakes that I made that really cost us," Flynn said.
Rodgers has a season quarterback rating of 100.3 with 3,243 passing yards and 23 touchdowns. The Packers are currently 8-5 and are second in the NFC North behind the Chicago Bears.
Green Bay’s game against New England will start at 8:20 PM ET on Sunday, December 19th.
