Packers’ Aaron Rodgers wins Super Bowl MVP award (Part 1)
Brett Favre who? Oh, you mean the quarterback that the Green Bay Packers had before they started Aaron Rodgers?
Does anyone really care about Favre anymore? A new name is on the list of Green Bay greats. First was Vince Lombardi, who, of course, can never be forgotten. Then came Bart Starr. Then Paul Hornung.
The list can go on and on, but the most recent addition is their new Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.
The last time that the Packers won the Super Bowl was way back in 1997 when Brett-what’s-his-name led the team to become world champions. He was 27 years old then, as Rodgers is now, but never received the honor of being Super Bowl MVP.
Rodgers completed 24 passes out of 39 attempts for 304 yards, a completion percentage of 61.5%, three touchdowns and not a single interception. The Packers won Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25.
This was Rodgers’ third year as a starting quarterback and he played especially well during the playoffs, winning three road games and, lastly, the Super Bowl. He was calm under pressure, accurate and made big plays when the team needed them most.
"I've never felt like there's been a monkey on my back. The organization stood behind me, believed in me", said Rodgers. "I told Ted [Thompson] back in 2005 he wouldn't be sorry with this pick. I told him in '08 that I was going to repay their trust and
get us this opportunity".
Rodgers had been General Manager, Ted Thompson's, first round draft pick in the 2005 National Football League (NFL) Draft. And he definitely did repay Thompson with his three touchdown passes, two to Greg Jennings and one to Jordy Nelson.
So three touchdown passes, what’s so great about that? Well, look at their opponents, the Steelers allowed an average of 14.5 points per game during the regular season, which is the lowest in the league.
However, they allowed the Packers to get 31 points. The Packers had even been ahead 21-3 at one point! Remember, these are the same Steelers that have linebacker James Harrison, who is known as the most violent player in the league, and strong safety Troy
Polamalu, who just won The Associated Press’ NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.
"He is the reason they won", Steelers defensive lineman Brett “The Beard” Keisel said. Steelers Head Coach, Mike Tomlin, also said "He showed his mettle and continued to stand in there and throw the football accurately".
Well, isn’t that what quarterbacks do? Yes, but that’s not all that Rodgers did. He also analyzed the defense before every single play and changed the plays on the line of scrimmage before the snap.
He did have a bad start, a third quarter slowdown, and, a couple of big drops, but was able to win even without a running game, which accounted for only 50 of their total 338 yards.
Give the guy a break, he’s played in only one playoff game before this season.
"We put everything on his shoulders", Packers Coach. Mike McCarthy said. "He did a lot at the line of scrimmage for us against a great defense".
