Packers’ Aaron Rodgers wins Super Bowl MVP award (Part 5)
This is a continuation of the previous article, discussing Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers winning the Super Bowl MVP award and who else could have won it.
Now that everyone knows why Rodgers won the Super Bowl MVP award, is there a player who deserves it more?
Now before all you Cheeseheads start berating me because it sounds as though I’m about to pick one of the Steelers, slow down. The Steelers did not play well at all.
Look at Roethlisberger. He does not do well at all when it comes to the Super Bowl. In this one, he completed only 25 passes out of 40 attempts, which is a 62.5% completion percentage, for 263 yards, about 6.6 yards per attempt.
Out of those 263 yards, Big Ben had only two touchdowns and gave up two interceptions and had a poor quarterback rating of 77.4.
Compare him to Rodgers, 24 of 39 for 204 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Rodgers was obviously much better. But Big Ben seems to do poorly in all big games. He has won two Super Bowls already but has had a poor show in both of them, compared
to the opposing quarterbacks.
The first Super Bowl that Big Ben has won was Super Bowl XL back in 2006 against the Seattle Seahawks. But saying that Big Ben won is not accurate.
He completed nine passes out of 21 attempts, a completion percentage of 42.8%, for 123 yards. Even worse is that he did not throw a single touchdown pass but had two interceptions.
Steelers’ wide receiver, Antwaan Randle El, was better in that Super Bowl. He became the first wide receiver to throw a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl. And not a small one either, it was a 43 yard pass to Hines Ward.
The Seahawks lost by 11 points. Quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck, played much better than Big Ben did. He completed 26 passes of 49 attempts for 269 yards and one touchdown. So how did the Steelers win?
It was the rest of the team. Willie Parker ran for a 75 yard touchdown. Big Ben ran 10 yards for a touchdown. Ward was named Super Bowl MVP after catching five passes for 123 yards and a touchdown.
In Roethlisberger’s second Super Bowl win, the Steelers played the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. Big Ben completed 21 passes out of 30 attempts for 256 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner completed 31 passes
out of 43 attempts for 377 yards, three touchdowns and only one interception!
So how in the world did the Steelers win?
Well this game was a lot closer than their last Super Bowl win. The Steelers won by four points and made their winning touchdown with 35 seconds left in the game.
Santonio Holmes was named Super Bowl XLIII MVP after catching nine passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, arguably much better than Roethlisberger did. So as you can see, it was not Big Ben that won these Super Bowls, but instead the great players around
him.
So is it the same case with Rodgers? Should someone else have won the MVP award? After all, Nelson made nine receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown while Jennings caught four passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns.
