Packers’ LB Erik Walden booked with misdemeanour charge – NFL News
Green Bay Packers maybe enjoying an unbeaten season but linebacker Erik Walden is living a nightmare as he was charged on Wednesday with misdemeanour disorderly conduct after being implicated of hitting his girlfriend.
The incident took place late at night after a Packers 27-15 victory over Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day. The incident took place reportedly at 2am when Walden got into a heated argument with his live in girlfriend and hit her
leading to bruising on the face. Police were notified by the victim at 4am with police arresting the linebacker at 8am in the morning.
The initial charge of domestic violence substantial battery however has now been reduced after further investigation and with his girlfriend giving different statements.
"It's clear, I think, at least from the district attorney's perspective, the initial charge that jailed Mr. Walden was probably inappropriate," Defence Attorney Steve Richards said.
If found guilty Erik Walden could face up to 90 days of jail time and a $1000 fine. The linebacker has already been banned from making physical contact with his girlfriend and spent a few days in jail when charges were first pressed.
His profile as a Packers star however will not result in any leniency from the prosecution as he will face the same consequences as any other person facing his first assault charges. District Attorney John Zakowski already considers
Walden as the primary attacker with the victim punching him in self-defence after the hit.
"We don't know exactly what, blow by blow, transpired," Zakowski said. "It was reported by her as a fight, but that he pushed her. And originally, her statement is that he pushed her, and she swung back to defend herself. In that
context, it appears to us that he was the primary physical aggressor."
Green Bay Packers are refusing to comment on the situation as they await the jury’s verdict when Walden is due in court on December 27. Walden has already made a public apology to his team, colleagues and fans and will continue
to play for Packers.
The linebacker is currently out on a bond and his status in the unbeaten Packers side remains secure.
