Packers extend Charles Woodson’s contract into 2015
Charles Woodson has been a cornerback for the Green Bay Packers since 2006 when he signed a seven-year $52 million dollar deal after leaving the Oakland Raiders. On Thursday the Packers decided to extend the contract, set to finish in 2013. The extension is for an extra two years.
The actual details of the contract were shrouded in secrecy from the press until just earlier today. All we knew for sure was that it would definitely increase the $6.5 million salary he was already set to receive over the next three years.
Earlier today, without going into too much of the specifics, Woodson’s agent Carl Poston broke the silence when he told KDVR that, “What was key on this deal is that the team essentially made a three-year commitment to Woodson where he can make over $33 million over the next three years. Overall it’s a new five-year deal with a max value over $55 million that has $21 million in advances and bonuses.”
In his first season with the Packers Woodson lead the National Football Conference with eight interceptions. In the four, injury-plagued seasons he’s spent with Green Bay, Woodson accomplished 28 interceptions, seven of which were returned for a touchdown. In 2009 he was nominated the Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
With such great numbers and with many years of good play still in him, the 34-year-old Woodson has proven himself to be a valuable asset to the team. He already holds the Packers all time franchise record for most defensive touchdowns. With his constant professionalism and athletic play Green Bay is undoubtedly doing the right thing by putting their faith in this constantly sharp Heisman Trophy winner.
If Woodson can manage to avoid injury for the remainder of his tenure with the Packers, there is no telling how far this “Cheesehead” can help take his team and no limit to the loudness of Lambeau Field when they announce his name and number.
The next five years are looking good for Green Bay.
