Question:

Packing for Costa Rica...going to the beach and rainforest?

My family and I are taking a 2 week trip to costa rica, starting mid-february. We're staying at the beach for the first half of the trip, where I'm pretty sure it's warm, sunny, and dry. But we're then going to the rainforest. I know it's still supposed to be pretty warm there, but is it really rainy? Should we pack (or buy) warm waterproof coats and umbrellas, or is that unnecessary?

  1. If you're going to the rainforest, you'll probably need some warm clothing at night.  And, you definitely need to bring at least a waterproof poncho unless you want to walk in the rain.  Believe it or at, global warming is actually extending the rain season in Costa Rica every year.  I found that out last year when it rained nonstop in the middle of January.

  2. Pack them. You'll need them if your heading to a cloud or rain forest.

  3. Bring an umbrella but skip on the raincoats

I go to costa RIca every year - here is my packing list:

    t-shirts

    3 pairs of shorts

    1 pair lightweight long pants

    hat

    2 swimsuits

    Socks

    flip flops

if you're planning hardcore hiking, take boots

    Small medical kit

    Small sewing kit

    Toiletries and prescription meds

    Sunglasses, spare glasses, contacts

    Sunblock

    Bug spray

    Small Umbrella

    Small flashlight

    Camera

Guidebook (Lonely Planet or Moon guide)

    Journal/writing materials

    Spanish/English dictionary

    Deck of cards

    Frisbee

    Some zip lock plastic bags

  4. It depends also on which rain forest you're headed to, but in general, mid-February is not all that rainy, in fact, I would even dare say dry.  Pack lightly.  And buy a cheap umbrella when you get there.
