Pacquiao says Mayweather needs him
These days, even with a November 13 fight scheduled with Antonio Margarito, Manny Pacquiao can’t shake off the ghost of Floyd Mayweather Jr. He continues to challenge him and deflect questions, stating during a promotional tour that the undefeated welterweight needs him-not the other way around.
"I don't need him, he needs me,” Pacquiao said. “Compare my achievements in boxing to his achievements.”
There have been no less than two official rounds of negotiations between the two fighters with nothing coming to fruition. On the first occasion, the Mayweather team demanded that Pacquiao be subjected to Olympic-style drug testing through the training period up to the bout. After initially refusing, Pacquiao has now agreed to the demands of the Mayweather team, but the fight has still not been confirmed.
Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, believes that both parties discussed the issues at hand. "I know there must have been negotiations going on. Whatever he wanted to do, we were accepting it. Whatever he wanted. Manny said, 'I want to fight. I'll agree to anything.' I thought the fight was a shoo-in."
Instead of personally commenting on an upcoming fight with “Pacman,” Mayweather has remained silent and cryptic, spurring national criticism. His last official statement, after a bout with “Sugar” Shane Mosley, was that he wished to spend time with his family and devote less to his boxing for the present.
It is being said that a mega-fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather would be the highest-grossing fight in the history of boxing.
