Pacquiao to call Mayweather’s bluff
As we approach day 700 of Floyd Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao speculation, news reaches us that the fight may be closer than ever and Pacquiao is about to call Mayweather’s bluff.
Word is circulating that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has sent the contract offer over to Mayweather’s mansion via carrier pigeon and the ball is now entirely in “Money’s” court.
Trainer Freddie Roach was quoted as saying, “At this point I feel that Manny is going to agree to everything.”
“That’s our bluff. We’re going to call his bluff. We’ll see…I can’t speak for Manny, I can’t speak for (Bob) Arum but I feel the fight will happen because Manny is going to call his bluff and say ‘let’s do it.’”
The fact that Roach refers to it as a bluff is interesting, insinuating that Mayweather is trying to put barriers in the way of the fight happening and this is all a big smoke screen. Still who cares as long as it moves the fight along? Although you can’t read too much into it, Roach loves a sound-bite and he’s probably just saying anything now because he must be sick of answering questions about it.
Mayweather wants the unlimited drug testing and is rumoured to be after something like a 40-60 split of the purse and the world is waiting to see if Pacquiao agrees to this. “Pacman” is in politics these days, so he is much more likely to relent for the sake of the majority.
Then again, when do politicians ever do anything Joe public wants?
If Mayweather slams his fist down and goes all Roberto Duran with a “no mas” to the contract offer, then apparently Pacquiao will either face Miguel Cotto again or the disgraced Antonio Margarito. Neither of these fights would interest anyone other than Arum as they are both signed to Top Rank.
Still the date of November 13th is starting to loom and both sets of trainers and promoters will want maximum time for preparation and making as much money as humanly possible.
Tick-tock-tick-tock.
