Pacquiao to train in Manila
Instead of training in Texas for his upcoming fight on November 3, pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is set to train in Manila in order to fulfill his duties as Sarangani representative.
Pacquiao made the announcement yesterday after arriving home from a week-long tour promoting his upcoming bout with boxing bad boy Antonio Margarito. The fight will be held at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, and will be for the vacant junior middleweight WBC title.
According to Pacquiao’s business manager Eric Pineda, Rizal Governor Casimiro Ynares Jr. offered to make the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig, Philippines available to Pacquiao. Pineda added that the governor, who admires Pacquiao in and out of the ring, promised to include all of the necessary facilities and equipment for training.
Freddie Roach and Alex Ariza, who make up much of Pacquiao’s camp, originally wanted Pacquiao train in Baguio City, where he trained for a WBO title last November.
Pacquiao showed dedication towards wanting to serve his constituents when, just hours after his arrival home, he attended committee hearings in Congress.
He said that he would “start training this week by jogging” in order to begin preparing for the bout, which is two months away. He said that gym work would commence next week.
Pacquiao is the favourite for the fight, as he had overcome all other recent competition put before him. In 2008, Pacquiao went up in weight in order to qualify for the welterweight division to challenge boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya. Despite being the visibly smaller fighter, Pacquiao was able to hit De la Hoya at will, and reduce him to a punching bag. By the eighth round De la Hoya’s corner called an end to the punishment.
