Pacquiao’s family insisting on retirement – Boxing News
Former WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao was knocked out by junior welterweight titlist Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The stunning fall of the Filipino icon was seen by many as the end to his legendary career but
he refused to hang up his glove. However, Pacquiao wept as he heard his wife Jinkee Pacquiao urging him to retire while crying on television and so did his mother.
“When you see your husband get hurt, you cannot even sleep,” said Jinkee following Pacquiao’s loss past Saturday. Jinkee was present in the arena to watch her husband take on his nemesis for the fourth time. While Pacquiao was leading the show, an unexpected
blow to the face from Marquez landed him motionless on the canvas for several seconds.
Jinkee had rushed to the ring with tears in her eyes to know her husband’s condition.
“You know the answer to that. He knows what I am asking him,” said Jinkee when asked if she wants Pacquiao to retire.
Not just Jinkee, even Pacquiao’s mother Dionisia appealed her son to retire. Previously in an interview, she had spoken of Pacquiao’s long journey as a fighter, saying he has achieved enough and he should retire.
“I have long asked you son, it is time to retire because you started boxing at such a young age. I always pray that he will stop. I asked God to tell my son to stop,” said his mother some time back.
When asked about the knockout blow by Marquez, she expressed her shock, saying it was an appalling moment for her.
“I was shocked yesterday. The way he suddenly fell,” she added for Pacquiao’s knockout.
When asked, Pacquiao iterated that although he does not want to hurt his family and his followers, he is not in the mood of hanging up his gloves, believing that he still has enough left in him to prove.
Unfortunately, Pacquiao stands at a stage where every iconic fighter comes once in his lifetime. It is the time when you have to decide if you want to carry on and lose your legacy or burn off as an icon.
