  1. I don't know anyone who wears padded gloves, but I know lots of players who wear knitted cotton glove liners. You may need one size larger gloves to accomodate the glove liner if you try it.

Two other advantages of glove liners: First is absorption of sweat so your gloves don't get so wet, Second, the ball "nestles into" the glove better with the soft backing of the liner and comes out with a little more spin (if you're trying to put "English" on it...if you're not,  this advantage is slight, of course).

The padded gloves do not, in my experience, afford much protection against bruises or the general swelling that is inevitable among novice players.  I'm in this group myself in the sense that, although I've plyed for many years, I had to stop playing for several months due to a bad cut on my right palm.  Now the injured area, while healed, is still tender and "smarts" when I hit a handball.  The liners are not quite adequate protection so I'm using still another layer, which is a band-aid or 2  just over the tender new flesh where the cut was.  When I first resumed playing, the rest of the right palm and my left hand were a little tender after a game, just like a new player's would be, as they had grown unnaccustomed to handball, but that was to be expected and improved pretty quickly.

For what its worth, getting your hands "accustomed" to striking a handball is not, as many people seem to think, a matter of developing callouses.  I've read, and I think it makes sense, that its a matter of improving the circulation in your hands.  When you hit a handball, you damage many capillaries and other related cells and your body learns to heal and "re-grow" more of them.

Good luck.  Whatever you do don't stop playing.  Handball is the best game there is by far.  Studies consistently show it to be the best exercise and, while it takes a while to learn (especially the "off" hand) its so much fun, it is addictive.
