Paddy Lowe claims off-throttle Blown Diffuser ban was ‘unpoliceable’ – Formula 1 news
Paddy Lowe, the technical director of McLaren has said the ban on off-throttle Blown Diffusers by the officials was quite ‘unpoliceable.’
The officials of the sport recently banned the off-throttle Blown Diffusers at the British Grand Prix but due to some technical issues, they lifted the ban on Saturday before enforcing it once again later on in the weekend.
The British Grand Prix was quite hectic for both the teams and the officials of the sport as a number of meetings were held in order to discuss this ban and come up with a reliable and technical solution to this problem.
However, Lowe believes that the officials should not be blamed for this confusion over this past weekend as the connection between engine mapping and the Blown Diffusers was quite technical and unforeseen for them.
“I think the FIA have done an honest job and worked very hard to try and police the regulations as they see they are. I think they've only realised now as the weeks have gone on how difficult it is and I don't think there is any embarrassment for them as
long as you reach a view that the regulations are unpoliceable in this respect and in the short-term,” he told the media.
In the end, the officials of the sport finally decided to enforce the ban at least for this weekend and further details and a decision regarding this matter is still pending.
Paddy Lowe claims that the best solution for this problem is to return to the same regulations used for the European Grand Prix in Valencia as none of the teams had any sort of problem with those regulations.
“Just because you have regulations it doesn't mean they are always policeable, [especially] if they are complex and difficult to interpret and difficult to measure,” he said.
Nevertheless, it seems that the team that was affected the most as a result of these rule changes was McLaren as they were well off the pace of Red Bull. However, Lewis Hamilton drove the car quite spectacularly throughout the race as a result of which,
the team was able to secure some points at their home race.
