Paddy Lowe says McLaren may try to attain pole at the Singapore Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
The technical director of McLaren told that the team may try to attain pole position during the qualifying round of Singapore Grand Prix because they are targeting the championship lead.
It was the fourth time in a row that Lewis Hamilton won a race starting from the pole position. He told that starting from the pole positions tends to have an impact over the balance of car and handling the tyres. This may cause them to do some things differently
to attain the pole position as they believe that if they start the race from pole they have more chances of winning the race.
Lowe said, “We can influence the difference between race and qualifying pace in a few areas. In most areas we can't, in the few areas we can we tend to make calculations about how we weight that in priority between the two. I have to say I agree that the
recent statistics kind of show that weighting has kind of been stronger than most people appreciated.”
Furthermore, he added that in the current season they are a stronger team than Red Bull because they have the quicker car whereas in the last year they could not attain the lead from Red Bull although they had a strong car.
“We are in the great position that we can qualify well at the moment, and that is proving to be a strong benefit relative to our race pace which is relatively weaker,” he said.
The technical director believes that they are in a strong position as still seven races are yet to go in the current season.
McLaren currently stands at the second position in the Constructors’ Championship with 243 points. The championship leader, Red Bull, attains 272 points. The difference in the points is very less as the Red Bull drivers have not been able to exhibit impressive
performance in the last few races however it will be too early say which team will attain the leading position by the end of current 2012 season because still there are seven races left.
Let’s see if McLaren will be able to attain the leading position in the current season or not.
