Padraig Harrington accepts he will not be featuring in the Ryder Cup this year
The US PGA Championship is in full swing with two days of the tournament having already passed. The biggest names in the world of golf have gathered at the prestigious Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the Ocean Course.
Many players are here for the Championship, while others are here to prove a point - that point being that they should be the wild card entry in the Ryder Cup. Padraig Harrington is one of the players who entered the tournament to prove himself to the European
captain of Ryder Cup, Jose Maria Olazabal.
This was a golden opportunity for the Irish professional golfer. He only needed to perform well in this tournament to get in the European side of the Ryder Cup.
Unfortunately for Harrington, he failed to impress the European captain with his game.
Harrington was on the right track on the first day of the tournament. He started his first round with an eagle which was followed a bogey. He ended the front nine with another bogey which made his score even par.
He carded two more birdies on the back nine, on the twelfth and fifteenth hole. These made his score two-under par at the end of first day.
Harrington was going quite smoothly and just had to be consistent on the second day as well but failed to do so.
On the second day, Harrington carded three bogeys on the front nine. His front nine had no birdies or eagles. On the back nine, he scored two more bogeys and a birdie. These made his score four-over par for the day and his total score became two-over par.
In an interview Harrington said, “He said it, there you go. He obviously has other players in mind. Put it this way, I won’t be waiting for the call. But I can’t be happier with my form”.
“At least it’s clearer in my mind now. Obviously I’ll have to do something very good here or at the Barclays in a fortnight. It‘s pretty clear I‘m not in his reckoning at the moment,” he added.
Now Padraig Harrington will have to do something extraordinary to actually get in to the European Ryder Cup side.
