Padraig Harrington alters his vacation plans to improve FedExCup Rankings before the Playoffs
Celebrated Irish golfer, Padraig Harrington has apparently called off a vacation plan to the Bahamas this week and has now decided to go for the Wyndham Championship on the PGA Tour in a bid to barge into the Top-125 on the FedExCup Rankings to qualify for
the $10-million Playoffs starting next week. Interestingly though, the decision was influenced by Harrington’s wife who suggested the 39-year-old Irishman to change his vacationing plan for the same.
“It wasn’t a decision I was going to make and tell the family we’re not going but it was a decision my wife was happy to make on my behalf,” the affable Irishman said.
Harrington who is now perched at 130th on the FedExCup Rankings, was hoping to improve his position with a strong performance in the PGA Championship. He finished for a joint 64th in the last major of the season posting a disappointing score of
11-over on the aggregate. He opened up with solid rounds of 73 and 69 but slumped to consecutive sloppy rounds of 75 and 74 on the final two days.
“I thought I was going to get through last week, done enough, but my wife actually made the decision, she says, ‘I think you got to go and play.’” said Harrington, “I have a 7-year-old and 3-year-old. We only had to tell the 7-year-old we were changing the
plans. … One swimming pool is the same as the next to (the 3-year-old).”
Currently ranked number 74th on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Harrington has won three major titles in the course of his professional career, making him one of the most successful Irishman in the sport. He won the Open Championship
twice in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship in 2008 amongst his 26 professional victories.
Born in Dublin in 1971, Harrington turned professional in 1995 after successfully guiding the English team to victory in the 1995 Walker Cup. He pulled in his first professional title on the European Tour at the 1996 Peugeot Spanish Open. The Irishman won
at least one event on the European Tour through 2000-2004 and remained in top-ten on the European Tour Order of Merit.
Harrington won the Order of Merit in 2006 and also the European Tour Golfer of The Year award in 2007 and 2008. He was also nominated as the Player of The Year on PGA Tour in 2008. His last victory came at the Iskandar Johor Open in 2010 and has not won
a single event since then.
The Wyndham Championship is schdeuled this week at the Greensboro and quite a few players will be hoping to improve their rankings for the FedExCup Playoffs ahead. The Playoffs will begin with the starting event, The Barclays, next week and will culminate
with the Coca Cola tournament in October.
