Padraig Harrington commits to participate in the Volvo Golf Champions
Padraig Harrington of Ireland has confirmed to participate in the European Tour’s ‘tournament of champions’, the Volvo Golf Champions, slated to start from January 10, 2012.
The event will be staged at the Durban Country Club, featuring a total of 35 current and past European Tour winners, vying for a share of US$2 million prize purse.
The tournament is known for attracting a strong field each year. This year, too, the event has reeled in 28 winners from the 2012 European Tour season, along with seven European Tour members with more ten victories in the past.
Harrington, along with Darren Clarke, Retief Goosen, Colin Montgomerie, José María Olazábal and Thomas Björn, qualified through the second category.
The three-time major champion was the last addition to this season’s edition of the tournament, as the entries closed on Thursday, December 21, 2012.
He is one of the strongest additions to the tournament, considering the fact that he holds a decent track record in the region.
Last year, he participated in the Volvo Golf Champions and finished tied for the 10th position on the leaderboard.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he stated that he will try to record a better finish this season, by maintaining consistency his game during the tournament week.
He also expressed his pleasure in ending his 2012 campaign on a high note – he won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and finished tied for the ninth position at the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
According to him, a small winter break will also help him rejuvenate his energy to make a strong start to his 2013 European Tour campaign.
“I was playing really well towards the end of 2012 and now that I am part-way through my winter training programme, I am looking forward to getting out on Tour and competing,” he said.
“I think this is an ideal tournament to start my year off where there is a limited elite field to test myself against, no cut and beautiful weather. It is a great event and I am very much looking forward to returning to South Africa in January,” he added.
