Padraig Harrington continues his push for the Ryder Cup Team
Players from the Europe and America have enhanced their efforts in order to be part of the Ryder Cup. Ryder Cup is one of the most prestigious golfing events to be held across the globe.
Its history dates back to year 1926, where it all started from an exhibition match, which then led to the establishment of Ryder Cup.
The Ryder Cup is the only tournament of the world where players compete for name not for the money. There is no prize money of any sort in this event, it is just played for the glory.
With about one and a half months left before the teams are finalized on both the sides, players have started their final push for a spot in the Ryder Cup team.
Each team consists of twelve players, which are selected on the basis of various scoring systems, like on the US team, the top eight players in the ranking get the automatic spot, while the remaining four are the hand picks of the captain.
Whereas in the European Team, the top five players are selected from European Ryder Cup points list and top five from the World Ryder Cup points list. Only the remaining two are the handpicked choices of the captain.
Padraig Harrington seems to be in good form and looks closest to getting a Ryder Cup spot. The Irishman has recently played some excellent golf.
He finished T13 at the St. Jude Classic, T4 at the US Open and T11 at the recently concluded Travelers Championship.
Currently, Harrington is way below, 28, in the European Ryder Cup points list. Moreover, in the World Ryder Cup points list, he is at 22.
Looking at this, it might be very difficult for him to qualify for an automatic qualification into the team. However, if he continues his good run, then there is a slight chance of him securing an automatic qualification.
Nevertheless, if he continues to play like he is playing, possibilities are that the European Team captain, José María Olazábal Manterola, might pick him for the last two spots seeing his current run of form.
