Padraig Harrington eager to record a strong finish at the Volvo Golf Champions
Ireland’s Padraig Harrington has committed to play in the Volvo Golf Champions, slated to start from January 10, 2012. The tournament will be staged at the Durban Country Club.
The event, which is also known as European Tour’s ‘tournament of champions’, will  feature a total of 35 current and the past European Tour winners, who will contend against each other for a share of US$2 million prize fund.
The Volvo Golf Champions is known for attracting a strong field each year. This season, the tournament is set to showcase a total of 28 European Tour champions from the 2012 golf season and seven tour members who have recorded 10 or more victories in their
careers.
Harrington was among the seven players who qualified through the second category. He was the last player to confirm to participate in the event.
According to the golf commentators, Harrington is one of the strongest additions to this season’s edition of the tournament, considering his decent track record in the region.
He also participated in the last year’s edition of the event, and recorded a top-10 finish on the leaderboard. He now plans to perform even better, in a bid to mount a title charge this year.
According to the three-time major champion, he will have to maintain consistency in his game, in order to contend strongly in the tournament.
While talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in marking a decent finish to his 2012 campaign – he won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and recorded a top-10 finish at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
“I was playing really well towards the end of 2012 and now that I am part-way through my winter training programme, I am looking forward to getting out on Tour and competing,” said the Irishman.
“I think this is an ideal tournament to start my year off where there is a limited elite field to test myself against, no cut and beautiful weather. It is a great event and I am very much looking forward to returning to South Africa in January,” he added.
