Padraig Harrington hopes to be lucky in his third attempt
Padraig Harrington was all set to fly to China, until he received a late call from the authorities in Bermuda.
He decided to opt out of the BMW Masters in China and instead flew straight to Bermuda to play in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at the Port Royal Golf Club.
PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a 36-hole exhibition tournament, which is played on the island of Bermuda, at the Port Royal Golf Club.
The winner takes home hefty prize money of $600,000. This is, however, not an official tour event and the field is only limited to the four major winners of the year, who get the invitation to play in Bermuda.
Harrington has previously come close to winning this event twice. He has lost twice in the playoffs at Bermuda, could this be his third lucky attempt?
"Hopefully this is third time a charm," triple major winner Harrington said. "I've come close twice in Grand Slams and hopefully it will be that close coming down the stretch this week and it would fall in my favour".
In the 2007 playoff, Harrington lost to Argentine Angel Cabrera and in 2008, he lost to the American Jim Furyk.
His loss to Cabrera was a bitter one. Padraig finished his round and Cabrera needed a birdie to force the game into the playoffs.
He not only forced the game to enter the playoffs but went on to defeat the Irishman in the playoffs as well.
"It's funny, I can't remember the playoff which I obviously lost to Jim Furyk, but I really remember the one I lost to Cabrera," Harrington said.
"He got the last (hole) to get into the playoff. I thought I had it won. I remember that one all right".
Before Harrington, Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell were offered a spot vacated by Ernie Els. After they had excused themselves, the Irishman was asked to complete the four-man field.
The Masters champion, Bubba Watson is absolutely delighted to play in the exclusive event.
Earlier, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf was held in Hawaii, before moving to Bermuda in 2007. It is rated as one of the most exclusive tournaments in golf.
