Padraig Harrington looking forward to another major winning season – Golf News
Following a winless 2011 golf season, Padraig Harrington is looking forward to making a quick comeback in the game of golf while expecting another win in the major championships.
He was talking to a press conference at The Links, Fancourt, where he will play his debut tournament of the 2012 European Tour season, the Volvo Golf Champions.
During the last season, he appeared in the Masters and Open where he missed the cut. Consequently, he fell out of the top 50 and is currently listed at the 89th position in the Official World Golf Rankings.
It also currently disqualifies him from the Masters Tournament, scheduled for the first week of April, 2012.
To earn a place in the Masters, he must register a win or place himself among the top 50 players in the world’s rankings till the end of March 2012.
When he was asked about his performance in the recent major championships, he admitted that he had a bad run in 2011.
However, he added that it does not matter much to him, as the major wins cannot come every year and he expects to do it in the upcoming editions.
"When you look at Nick Faldo it took him 20-25 years (as a professional) to win six - the most by any European (of modern times),” he said.
He further stated, "I am not foolish to believe that because I won one in 2007 and two in 2008 I should win three in 2009, or even another one”.
"They don't come around that easy. Even in my era, the greatest player since I've been a pro - Tiger Woods - has not won one a year. There have been plenty of years he has not won any,” he continued.
"People have this idea that just because you play well and you win one you should be doing that every year”.
He is now confident and in a perfect shape to make history again. His victories in the major championships came in 2007 and 2008, when he successfully earned two consecutive victories in the Open Championship.
The PGA Championship was another win in the major that he managed in the same period.
