Padraig Harrington misses the cut in Transitions Championship – Golf news
Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington missed the cut for the third round of the $5.5-million Transitions Championship which is underway at the par-71 Copperhead Course at Innisbrook resort in Tampa Bay.
The 39-year-old Dubliner failed to make the cut, which was pre-defined at 1-under par. He teed off from the front in the second round and picked a birdie on the first hole. He missed a par-putt at the ninth green and wrapped the front at par. However, on
his way to the clubhouse, he managed to pick up a birdie at the 17th hole and capped the round with a score of 1-under par.
This unimpressive score bought his overall score down to one-over par, but as he did not qualify the criteria, he had to bid goodbye to the tournament.
He was joined by several other players that include John Daly, Sean O’Hair, Ryo Ishikawa, K.J. Choi, Rocco Mediate, Arjun Atwal and Greg Chalmers.
Atwal, who hails from India, opened the second round with a decent pace as he birdied the opening hole. He attacked the pin with a wayward approach and managed to net one more birdie by the end of the front nine. He walked to the back at par as he encountered
two bogeys in the preceding holes. The actual damage to his scorecard happened on the greens that were comparatively harder. The Indian encountered two double-bogeys along three bogeys and crashed out of the tournament. He compiled a score of 6-over par.
Similar could be said about Rocco Mediate, who kicked off at a smooth pace and slid into danger after carding a 76 in the second round. The six-time winner on the Professional Golfers Association Tour picked two birdies against three bogeys and two double
bogeys.
Korean pride, Choi failed to pick a single point and instead carded three bogeys. The player was seen in and out of bunkers, which eventually broke the momentum of his game. Meanwhile, Japanese golfer Ishikawa failed to play for his people as he stated before
the start of the tournament and wrapped his second PGA Tour event with a score of 2-over par.
With most of the top punters out of the competition, the battle for the title is left in a few hands, who will meet on weekend to decide the owner of the $990,000 worth of prize money.
