Padraig Harrington puts his confidence into Tiger Woods and his bid to overtake Jack Nicklaus
One of the most successful Irish golfers, Padraig Harrington has now thrown his weight behind Tiger Woods and recently stated that the 14-major winner will soon be turning a new leaf in his form and sport. The Irishman, who has won three major championships
in the course of his career, seems to be well aware of the vows of a player who has apparently lost his swing and has slumped to oblivion in his otherwise stellar career.
“I still believe when he turns up and plays well in a given week, I think he's well capable of winning any major he plays in,” Harrington said Tuesday. “He still has a good ball flight. He still hits it well. Once he puts it together in a given week, he
can win and will going forward. ... OK, it wasn't his week that week. But when it is his week, he will win again.”
Harrington’s comments probably trace their roots to Woods’ opening five holes at the PGA Championship a few weeks back where he raced his way to the top of the leaderboard, only to find a water hazard right after that. Woods never recovered from that early
bogey in the first round and went over to post his worst opening round score, a seven-over, 77 he posted in any major event of his career. The 35-year-old eventually missed the cut.
“This is what I would have seen at the PGA,” Harrington said. “Certain he played better, much better than his score.”
Harrington also confided that a golfer who is not amply satisfied with his sport will not be satisfied with a low score at any given time either. He conceded that on quite a few occasions he felt as if he had played better but his score card would tell a
different story. Similarly there are times that he might have pulled in a round of 68 but felt as if he fell for a 72.
Harrington believes Woods is going through the same phase of technical unpredictability and foresees a recovery of the once mighty Woods in the near future. He even went over to say that Woods will take down the Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 major titles
in a matter of few years.
Woods, after dropping out of the top-125 players on the FedExCup Rankings, will not be playing at the FedExCup Playoffs this week starting off with the Barclays. This is the first time Woods has not qualified for the event and will be staying back at his
Jupiter home to reflect upon his loss at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
The only time he will be seen on the course will be at the JB Were Masters in Australia where he had already committed to play. He is also likely to make it into the President’s Cup upon Captain Fred Couples recommendation.
