Padraig Harrington seeks retribution at the Barclays Singapore Open
The three-time major champion Padraig Harrington has an ‘unfinished business’ to attend to when he returns to the Barclays Singapore Open, slated to start from November 8, 2012.
The US$6 million tournament will be played at the Sentosa Golf Club, and is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the European Tour.
Harrington entered the last three holes of the 2008 edition of the tournament with a one-stroke lead over Jeev Milkha Singh.
However, a couple of bogeys on the 16th and the 18th hole ruined his chances to record a victory in the tournament.
The Irishman admitted that the defeat certainly hurt him. However, he is confident to banish the bitter memories with a strong show this week in Singapore.
According to the golf commentators, Harrington’s resurging form may help him achieve his target, as he recently won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. It was his first victory since he won the 2010 Iskandar Johor Open.
“In 2008, it was probably my most bitter loss on a golf course,” the 14-time European Tour winner said.
“I was two shots ahead with three holes to play, played the last three holes magnificently but managed to play them in two over par. So I can certainly remember those three holes really well!”
He added, “I hit a beautiful shot into the 16th that went in the water, and I hit a beautiful a shot at the 18th that got stuck on the bank behind. I felt I got two of the worst breaks I’ve seen coming down the stretch”.
He also stated that Singh deserved a victory in 2008, and regarded him as one of the best players in the world.
Following this week, he will move to Hong Kong, in order to participate in the UBS Hong Kong Open. Thereafter, he will fly to Dubai, in a bid to contend in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
Winless for the past four years on the European Tour, Harrington wants to end the 2012 golf season on a high note, by recording at least one victory in the last three tournaments on his schedule.
