Padraig Harrington supports his paralysed relative by selling branding spaces
Padraig Harrington planned to support his wheelchair-bound relative financially, by selling branding space on his golf apparels and equipments.
The 40-year-old Irish professional golf player had supported the charities in the past. He again took an initiative to boost the financial figures for his relative and help him make his life easy.
Harrington’s cousin, Gerard Byrne, is a 35-year-old father of three children. He was paralysed due to a car accident and had suffered injuries as well.
His surgeons and doctors told him that he will not be able to walk ever again. Wheel chair is the only possibility for Byrne to move around in the future.
"This is why I never want to complain again about golf," Harrington said. "Gerard will need a lot of assistance in his life - a wheelchair-enabled car, renovations to his home and other things".
"My sponsors have agreed to allow me to offer all the branding on my clothing and bag to the highest bidder for three tournaments in March and April," he added.
Initially, Harrington sold his branding space for three tournaments. It will be the Houston Open, U.S. Masters and Heritage Classic where the spectators and other field members will see the new branding.
Harrington currently stands at the 87th position worldwide. He played two tournaments on the Professional Golf Association and on the European Tour this year.
In the last season, the Irish professional had not won any title. However, his strokes were good enough to attract some sponsors.
"We have a bid of 100,000 Euros ($134,200) for the front of my cap and 50,000 Euros for a space on my chest," Harrington said in January.
He turned professional in 1995 and since then has won 14 tournaments on the European tour, 5 on the PGA and 26 professional events overall.
Harrington is famous for winning three major titles as well. His debut major win was at The Open Championship in 2007, and later he repeated the victory in 2008.
He also recorded another victory in the same year at the PGA Championship.
Few players support their needy relatives and Harrington is among them. It is an impressive part that he is utilising his golfing skills to help his cousin.
