Padraig Harrington to contend for the Open Championship title
The Open Championship 2012 is about to start. The venue for the tournament is Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s Golf club. This is going to be one of the most interesting golf events of the year, as the biggest names in the game clash at this stage.
This is for the third consecutive year that the event is taking place at this course and in previous years the score has reached to double digits under par.
Irrespective of that, a few minor changes have been made in the course which is bound to change the outcome, especially if the weather conditions are not favorable.
For the title as always Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood are considered to be the top contenders.
This year Padraig Harrington, the Irish professional is one of the favourites to win the title. His name has also entered in the list of the top contenders for the Championship Open.
Harrington is also well aware of the fact that he is one of the favourites and this is just a boost for his confidence. He takes this as a positive sign and will put up a good fight in the tournament.
“I always think that if you’re looking for a good indicator of form, they (bookies) are very rarely wrong. So I’m fourth or fifth favourite and that’s good – I’ll take that. As I say, bookies are sharp people”.
One more thing which should be kept in mind is that he has shown great promise in the previous majors. He was able to occupy a top-10 position in the Masters. Moreover, in the US Open he ended on the fourth position after exhibiting a wonderful performance.
After playing on the Olympic club, Harrington participated in both the Championships in Connecticut and the Irish Open held at his home ground at the Royal Portrush Golf course.
The 40-year-old needs to make right changes in his game to win it. In an interview after dumping his coach Bob Torrance, he said, “I’ve been in touch with Bob [since the split] but not a massive amount, because it’s a difficult situation. It’s awkward. I
suspect and I hope that Bob is happy to see me playing well, but how does that reflect on him and how does it reflect on me?”
Harrington said that he does not need to prove himself to anyone and this is the correct way. “But it is valid to say that you need wins every so often in order to ease the external pressure. Yes, a victory would be important for me. And I believe it’s coming,”
he added.
This statement shows that he is very much confident about his game and winning a trophy in the coming tournaments.
Lately, Padraig Harrington has largely been criticised on his game. He needs to prove himself in the coming tournaments, to leave his mark as one of the top ranking golfers in the world. All he really needs is to have a win in order to give a solid answer
to all his critics.
For now Harrington has new problems to settle with the new coach, meanwhile the Scottish Open is just about to start.
Harrington is expected to arrive at the Castle Stuart for the Open with his new coach Pete Cowen.
