Paige Hareb and Sarah Mason survive the elimination round on day 2 of Rip Curl Women’s Pro
New Zealand’s Paige Hareb and her compatriot Sarah Mason walked away with top honours from their respective Round 2 heats of Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bell Beach presented by Ford Fiesta that went down at Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia, on Wednesday, April
4.
Hareb took down America’s Sage Erickson in the fifth heat of Round 2 to make her place into the fifth round while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The sixth heat saw Mason get the better of France’s Pauline Ado to successfully earn her place in the third round while bringing the competition to a premature end for her rival.
With some of the best female surfers from around the world in attendance at the primary event site, the fans expected the second day of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour event. The clean three-to-five foot waves breaking
at Bells Beach on Wednesday proved sufficient opportunities to the surfers to put on impressive performances in order to keep themselves alive in contention for the event title.
After failing to make a solid impact during their Round 1 heats, both Hareb and Erickson were determined to bounce back in Round 2. Pitted against each other in the fifth heat, both of them held nothing back during their battle for survival.
Erickson locked her first business-wave early in the heat to post a 6.00 on the score-board and went on to back it up with a 6.17 off her second business-wave in the final minutes of the heat for a resultant heat-total of 12.17 points.
Hareb, on the other hand, unloaded a series of exquisite tricks on her first business-wave halfway through the heat to post an impressive 8.00 on the score-board. In the dying minutes of the battle, she got herself a 6.00-point ride to finish with a heat-total
of 14.00 points, finishing ahead of Erickson to walk away with the win and thus secure her place in the third round.
The sixth heat pitted Mason and Ado against each other in a battle for the Round 3 spot.
Mason got off to an aggressive start, locking her first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat to post an 8.17 on the score-board After a long and determined hunt, she added an additional 9.17 points to her account, consequently finishing with
a heat-total of 17.34 points.
Ado failed to come up with a solid response and eventually finished with a heat-total of 12.20 points, which included a 6.40 and 5.80-point wave. As a result, she was forced to concede victory and thus the Round 3 spot to her rival.
